Candler (Candi) Shealy Smith, age 48, of Murrells Inlet, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at home following a short but courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on January 16, 1964, in Louisville, Kentucky. Candi was a graduate of Saluda High School, Class of 1981, in Saluda, South Carolina. She was a member of the Tiger Marching Band as a flutist. As a member of the Walter Newman Riding Academy in Aiken, South Carolina, Candi was an avid equestrian, where she competed on the state circuit in the Hunter Jumpers division. Candi won many prestigious awards with her favorite horse, Ringo.
Candi earned a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communications from Columbia College in 1985, and she earned a Masters Degree in Audiology from the University of South Carolina. She completed her Doctorate of Audiology at A.T. Still University in Mesa, Arizona.
While at Columbia College, she met her future husband, Frank. They were married October 14, 1989, in Saluda, South Carolina.
After moving to Myrtle Beach, Candi was employed at Pee Dee Speech and Hearing Center. She was presently practicing as a Clinical Audiologist with Drs. Rosner, Cunningham, and Osman of Coastal Carolina Otolaryngology. She loved her patients and working with her dedicated colleagues. She was a current member of The South Carolina Academy of Audiology, The American Academy of Audiology, and The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Candi served on various committees for the Waccamaw schools as an active member of the PTA. In addition, she was a current member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Candi relished football and soccer weekends with her family and friends. She cherished her family vacations shared with close friends. Candi was a passionate and loyal Gamecock fan.
More than any of her awards and accomplishments, Candi treasured her family most. She is the daughter of Dr. Wyman L. and Jeanette Matthews Shealy of Saluda, South Carolina. Survivors in addition to her parents are her beloved husband, Franklin Davis Smith; a daughter, Candler Davis Smith; and a son, Davis Shealy Smith, all of the home, and her mother in law, Martha Jenerette Smith of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her father in law, Dennis Lee Smith, Sr.
