I went for a colonoscopy because I had what I thought was a bleeding hemorrhoid. My diagnosis was really Stage 4 Anorectal Mucosal Melanoma. My first thoughts were “oh my gosh, how do I tell my children.” At that point I didn’t think about the journey or the battle that might lay before me, because this diagnosis was nothing I’d ever heard before. Breast Cancer I knew, I had even participated in breast cancer awareness events. Anorectal Mucosal Melanoma what the hell is that? So of course I went straight to Dr Google(internet medical advice).Everything I saw was grim, no hope, poor survival rates, you’re not going to live very long. Fortunately I got my mind into a place of that’s not gonna be me. I’ve got stuff to do. Within a couple of months after I had my medical treatment in order I told my family about my illness. I can truly say that I am so blessed to have such great support. I also have Multiple Sclerosis and that factor could have put a damper on my treatment. After a brain scan and a visit to my neurologist she cleared me for immunotherapy. I had 4 rounds of Keytruda and it didn’t work. Now I have Opdivo/Yervoy. I have had 2 rounds. I am a believer in God and that has given me so much peace. Of course I have moments but I quickly ask God to come in and make me whole. It is truly my source of strength. I work everyday and spend time with my wonderful husband, children, grandchildren and so many others who are supportive. Enjoy your life today. The future is Gods business.
